Meet-Up Hike to Ptarmigan Lake

Ptarmigan Lake is one of the iconic spots in the Sawatch Range. The hike starts steeply through a dense forest emerging onto a sub-alpine plateau, then continuing above tree line into the alpine zone around the main lake. Wildflower displays can be spectacular, the views north toward 14er’s Mt. Yale, Mt. Columbia and Mt. Harvard never disappoint.

Hike Level:  Moderate
Distance:  6.6 miles roundtrip
Elevation Gain: approx. 10,654 ft starting elevation, 12,154 maximum elevation; gain/loss of approx.. 1,500 ft.

Sunrise Hike to Sleeping Indian

Join us for a sunrise hike to the top of Sleeping Indian. Meet at the Buena Vista River Park bridge. You’ll get amazing views of Buena Vista and the surrounding valley once you reach the top!

Directions: Drive to the very end of East Main Street and take a left to turn into the BV River Park. At the fork, take another left. The parking area will be on the right-hand side of the dirt road. Park here and walk down the steps to the bridge that begins the Barbara Whipple Trail System.

Hike to Lost Lake

The Lost Lake hike begins at Cottonwood Pass road west of Buena Vista. The hike to Lost Lake is a beginner friendly and family friendly route. It’s about 1.3 miles to reach Lost Lake at an elevation of approximately 11,800 feet. The 360 degree mountain views are stunning, including Turner Peak (13,232 feet) to the northeast. Located above timberline, the area is also known for its lush wildflowers during the summer.

Hike Level:  Beginner
Distance:  2.6 miles roundtrip
Elevation Gain: approx. 11,200 ft starting elevation, approx.. 11,800 ft. maximum elevation; gain/loss of approx.. 600 ft

Meeting time/location: 8:30 am at The Trailhead in Buena Vista, 402 E. Main Street; the group will carpool to the trailhead.

Hike to Lake Hartenstein

The Hartenstein Lake hike begins at Cottonwood Pass road west of Buena Vista. The distance is around 6 miles round trip with a starting elevation 9,900 ft and a lake elevation of 11,430 ft (gain and loss of 1,530 ft).  The trail is rocky in places and has one stream crossing. Good shoes and poles/hiking sticks are important. This hike will be a steady uphill climb to the lake and all downhill on the return to the cars at the trailhead. Expect to be on the trail for approximately 5 hours.
