Meet-Up Hike to Ptarmigan Lake

Ptarmigan Lake is one of the iconic spots in the Sawatch Range. The hike starts steeply through a dense forest emerging onto a sub-alpine plateau, then continuing above tree line into the alpine zone around the main lake. Wildflower displays can be spectacular, the views north toward 14er’s Mt. Yale, Mt. Columbia and Mt. Harvard never disappoint.

Distance:  6.6 miles roundtrip
Elevation Gain: approx. 10,654 ft starting elevation, 12,154 maximum elevation; gain/loss of approx.. 1,500 ft.

Meeting time/location: 8:30 am at The Trailhead in Buena Vista, 402 E. Main Street; the group will carpool to the trailhead

Ride to Pomeroy Lake

Time: 8am – 2pm

Rating: Medium

Recommended equipment: 4×4 vehicle, no drive experience necessary but helpful.

Staging area: Avery Parsons Elementary School on Main Street. Staging at 7:45, leaving at 8am

Limit: 10 Vehicles

Trail Highlights: 

If you enjoy mining history, alpine fishing and camping then this trail is a must do. You will gain a glimpse of the areas mining history as you begin the trail at the old townsite of Romley. You will then pass several arial tram towers that are still standing before you reach the Mary Murphy Mine area, which offers an opportunity to explore several of the old structures that are still standing. After the mine you will continue through meadows and heavy timber before you reach the parking area at an elevation of 12,109′ with a view of Lower Pomeroy Lake. Upper Pomeroy Lake is about a mile hike farther up the basin along an old road and is situated below Pomeroy Mountain (13,151′).

Hike to Lake Hartenstein

The Hartenstein Lake hike begins at Cottonwood Pass road west of Buena Vista. The distance is around 6 miles round trip with a starting elevation 9,900 ft and a lake elevation of 11,430 ft (gain and loss of 1,530 ft).  The trail is rocky in places and has one stream crossing. Good shoes and poles/hiking sticks are important. This hike will be a steady uphill climb to the lake and all downhill on the return to the cars at the trailhead. Expect to be on the trail for approximately 5 hours.

  • Dress for the weather – mountain weather can change very quickly, please be prepared

  • Bring insect repellent
  • Camera, binoculars are optional

Meet-Up Hike and Fishing Session: Hancock Lakes

Meet-up with local fishing expert Brian Galyon to hike or 4×4 to a high alpine lake in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

Requirements: Must have experience fishing and all appropriate gear. Be prepared to be out all day; bring water, layers, and sack lunch. Must have a 2017 Colorado fishing license.
